The Women

February 11, 2007

I was honored to experience a rather extraordinary day yesterday. Those of you who've been reading my pages awhile will know that I have been blessed with such events, but yesterday could be considered a benchmark. A day in the life.

I was included in the invite to attend a Clearing up at my friend's future ranch and lodge. Several people had been invited, 4 men had even signed on, but only women showed up. The men all had excuses.

It was a cold and blustery morning, but all the women were in attendance with their snippers and lopers, hacksaws and chainsaws. The horse trail in the creek bed and Catery at Cerina's Arena needed clearing. Brush tends to build up during the Spring and Summer and the persistent rains had washed a lot of muck from the surrounding lands onto the property.

These women were not twenty-somethings. They were not even thirty-somethings. Few of them were even forty-somethings ... they were mature, vivacious, powerful, determined spirits with a quest. Each one of them had something to offer me, whether they realized it or not. I was there to document their work and progress, using the activity as an opportunity to practice my videography.

The women were just terrific. Bonnie, Sandy, Ruth, Kathy, Marlene, Sue, Susan, Suzanne, Pokey, Gregory, Rossana, Tory, Tracy and of course, Pattie and me (and perhaps a couple I'm not listing here!), all embracing life and their tasks at hand.

One pair had brought their dog Sophie with them. She was clearly a "city dog", a beautiful mix of Corghie and some other breeds, a gorgeous little almond-eyed face (Bonnie referred to her look as Asian) and a lovely disposition. One gal had left her little Yorkie in the car with it running so that he could have heat without having to get in the middle of all the bigger dogs. Emo. What a little character!

Of course Pattie had her brood of Rascal, Spottie and little Amber the rescued Shelty. Several of the women were involved in rescuing cats from unknown demise when their own caretakers could no longer care for them. Remarkable altruistic spirit.

I loved Gregory's stories of rescuing animals.  She had with her "Emma", a pup who had had pups. Gregory said that when she found Emma, the pups were nowhere in sight. She looked but never found them. Emma was a delightful little hound, obedient but still very young herself. Sweet, sweet little dog.

My only question is: when can we do this again!?
